The History of Cricket Umpiring in Sri Lanka

Cricket umpiring in Sri Lanka has a proud and respected history that reflects the growth and development of the game throughout the country. At the heart of this journey stands the Association of Cricket Umpires Sri Lanka (ACUSL), the only umpiring association officially recognized by Sri Lanka Cricket for the development and representation of cricket umpires in Sri Lanka.

Founded in 1944, ACUSL was established with the vision of promoting professionalism, discipline, fairness, and integrity in cricket officiating. The association’s founder President was Mr. S.P. Foenandar, whose leadership helped lay the foundation for organized cricket umpiring in the country during the early years of Sri Lankan cricket.

Over the decades, ACUSL has played a significant role in developing qualified umpires capable of officiating matches at school, club, domestic, and international levels. Through continuous training, mentorship, workshops, and evaluations, the association has consistently worked to improve the standards of umpiring in Sri Lanka while adapting to the evolving nature of modern cricket.

Sri Lanka has also produced several internationally recognized umpires who have represented the country with distinction on the global stage. Their achievements reflect the strong foundation and professional standards maintained within the local umpiring structure.

Today, ACUSL continues its mission of supporting cricket officials across the country by promoting fair play, maintaining high officiating standards, and preparing future generations of umpires to uphold the spirit and integrity of the game.
